Wicklow Town, Ireland

Wicklow Town, Ireland

Wicklow is situated on the slopes of Ballyguile Hill, overlooking a wide bay fringed by a crescent curve of coast.  The old town of narrow streets has been considerably renovated, but much of its old world atmosphere has been retained.  Today, a seaside and health resort, Wicklow has many attractions.  North of the town is a beach of sand and clean shingle backed by a fine stretch of sward called the Murrough, which is developed as a pubic promenade.

The tiny lighthouse in the large picture is Wicklow East Pier light – 1884. Active; focal plane 11 m (36 ft); flash every 5 s, white or red depending on direction. 7 m (23 ft) round cast iron tower with lantern, painted white with a red horizontal band at the base.
