Lake Louise – Canada
Did you Know?
Lake Louise
Framed all around by the Continental Divide, Lake Louise sits in a hanging valley, 1721m (5680 feet) high. The lake, long known to the Stoney Indians as ‘the Lake of the Little Fishes’ was named in honour of Princess Louise, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of Lord Lorne, Governor General of Canada. The glacial melt water feeding the lake contains a fine silt which stays suspended in the water reflecting the green rays of the spectrum. It is to this that Lake Louise owes its extraordinary colour, which varies between emerald green and opaque turquoise, depending upon the light.
