Church of St George at the Crossing

Russia - Church of St George

Church of St George at the Crossing
The architectural monument marked out the crossing point over the Velikaya River performed here by boats.  The church was built in 1494 in honour of St George.  In 1862 the church was in a miserable condition:  bush grew on the altar’s roof, iconostasis was about to collapse, and no finances available for its repair.  In 1879 the service could be held there no more, and the temple was closed down.  The help came from the ten Pskov Governor – M B Prutchenko.  The temple was repaired and assigned to Orthodox Latvians.  At that time the service was carried out there in two languages – Slavic and Latvia.
