The Great Seal of West Virginia
The seal contains the Latin Motto, Montani Semper Lirberi, which translates: Mountaineers Are Always Free. The center stone stands for strength, with the date of admission into the Union. The miner with the pick represents industry, and the farmer with the axe represents agriculture. The crossed rifles indicate freedom and liberty which were won, and ‘will be maintained by the force of arms.’
