Expansion Memorial

Jefferson National Expansion memorial was established at a National Park in 1935 to commemorate the westward expansion of the United States.  Designed by architect Eero Saarinen in 1947-1948, the 630 foot Gateway Arch was built between 1963 and 1965,  It stands as a monument to the city of St Louis and the diverse group of people that played a role in opening the vast wilderness west of the Mississippi.
